RAIL TRANSPORT

St. Petersburg has a broad network of rail transport. In St. Petersburg there are five railway stations that comprehensively provide for the needs of passengers and freight shippers. For the convenience of passengers there are new ticket offices equipped to the highest European standards, business-centers, cafes, restaurants, rest rooms and waiting rooms.
All five stations are located on one metro line greatly easing the transfer process.

AUTOMOBILE TRANSPORT

Automobile transportation network in St. Petersburg is the best in the North-West of Russia. The total length of the roads in Leningrad Oblast reaches 15,400 kilometres and 3,090 kilometres in St. Petersburg.
There are five main highways:
• «Russia» - from St. Petersburg to Moscow;
• «Narva» - from St. Petersburg to Estonia;
• «Kolskaya» - from St. Petersburg to Murmansk;
• «Scandinavia» - from St. Petersburg to Finland;
• St. Petersburg - Pskov.
We would like to remind those who come to St. Petersburg in their own car of some basic traffic rules. In Russia, vehicles keep to the right. The speed limit is 60 km/h in town. Driving in a state of alcoholic or drug intoxication is strictly prohibited!

WATER TRANSPORT

THE SEA PORT

St. Petersburg port can accommodate ships with a displacement up to 60,000 tons and a draft up to 11 metres. The port equipment capacity is estimated to be 20,000,000 tons a year.
About 30 private companies have partnership shares in the commercial operation of the port. St. Petersburg Administration participates in the port, too.

INTERNAL PORTS

The most important internal waterway in the North-West of Russia starts in St. Petersburg, and goes through the Neva, Lake Ladoga and the Svir to Lake Onega. The total length of internal waterways in St. Petersburg and Leningrad Oblast is about 2,500 kilometres.
There are three internal ports: St. Petersburg port, Svirsky port and Podporozhsky port.

MUNICIPAL PASSENGER TRANSPORT

St. Petersburg enjoys a well-developed system of municipal public transport. It includes ground transport (bus, trolley-bus, tram and taxi) and underground railway - the Metro.

GROUND PUBLIC TRANSPORT

Buses, trolley-buses and trams work 600a.m. to midnight. The fares are paid by tickets which can be bought from the conductor. You can also purchase a monthly card for a given type of transport, or a single card for all types of transport. Stops are marked with special signs in the city.
Municipal taxies work round the clock. They are marked with a checkered design and the letter T on the door. Taxi stops are also marked with the letter T. You can hire a taxi at a stop, or just hail it by lifting a hand, provided the stop is permitted in that place. The fares are shown by the counter. Taxies can be ordered by phone round the clock.

Route taxis work from 700a.m. till 1100p.m. As a rule, these minibuses have seats for 12-14 passengers. The minibus has a sign on the side, the bonnet or the windscreen with a figure showing the route number, as well as a board listing the itinerary, which is displayed on the sides of the vehicle. The route taxi, or 'Marshrutka', stops at public transport stops, or when requested, as with a normal taxi. Usually this is done by stretching out your hand. The journey costs from 15 to 25 rubles.

THE UNDERGROUND - THE METRO

The Metro has four lines. The Metro works 545a.m. to midnight. The fare is paid with small metal tokens or magnetic cards which can be bought at the stations.
